SUMMARY:Polytechnique: A film screening and discussion in honour of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:Content Warning: Gender-based violence \nThis ticketed event will start at 7pm with the screening of Polytechnique\, followed by group discussion facilitated by members of the Gender Empowerment Centre\, UVic Women in Engineering & Computer Science\, and HerCampus UVic. \nThe discussion will be focused on the impact of the event in a national context\, the intersectionality of gender-based violence\, and actions towards a more equitable\, violence-free society. \nAbout National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (NDRAVAW). \nNDRAVAW (December 6) it marks the anniversary of the 1989 “Montréal massacre\,” during which a gunman carried out an anti-feminist attack at École Polytechnique de Montréal. To this day\, this tragedy serves as a reminder of the realities of misogyny and gender-based violence in the national landscape and abroad.  \nAbout the Film \n“Polytechnique” is a representation of the December 6 events. Filmmaker Dennis Villeneuve (director of Dune) employed different techniques to ensure that this depiction would not glamorize or make a spectacle out of the event\, or bring sympathy to the attacker’s warped world view. Polytechnique focuses on the lives of the survivors\, which makes it a more compassionate\, human film. It is rated 14A\, and filmed in black and white to create a level of separation between the viewer and the violence. \n\nTicket Information \n\nAttendees will be charged regular Cinecenta admission for entry to this event. DESCRIPTION:Boundaries: one of the hardest damn things to figure out\, amirite? \nIn this FREE workshop facilitated by Hannah Harris-Sutro (www.bodywitch.com)\, participants will learn a simple\, practical\, body-centred process for figuring out their boundaries\, articulating those boundaries to those who need to know about them\, and maintaining those boundaries. Boundaries exist to structure our lives so that more of what we desire and need gets in\, and more of what drains and hurts us stays out\, and our bodies are a deep well of up-to-the-minute accurate information about our needs\, desires\, and capacities. Developing our skills around setting boundaries allows us to take better care of ourselves\, have more mutually nurturing relationships\, and ride the up & down ferris wheel of life more smoothly. \nThis workshop is dissociation-friendly & trauma-informed.
