About National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (NDRAVAW).
NDRAVAW (December 6) it marks the anniversary of the 1989 “Montréal massacre,” during which a gunman carried out an anti-feminist attack at École Polytechnique de Montréal. To this day, this tragedy serves as a reminder of the realities of misogyny and gender-based violence in the national landscape and abroad.
About the Film
“Polytechnique” is a representation of the December 6 events. Filmmaker Dennis Villeneuve (director of Dune) employed different techniques to ensure that this depiction would not glamorize or make a spectacle out of the event, or bring sympathy to the attacker’s warped world view. Polytechnique focuses on the lives of the survivors, which makes it a more compassionate, human film. It is rated 14A, and filmed in black and white to create a level of separation between the viewer and the violence.
